Male hair loss — what causes it and how to prevent it

Male hair loss — what causes it and how to prevent it
Why do we lose hair? Even if you started losing your hair at a young age, the cause is not always genetics. Stress, seasonal shedding, deficiencies, hormonal or age-related changes, chronic scalp tension, or weakened hair follicles — and that is only the beginning of the list of factors. At first, hair starts growing more slowly, becomes thinner, and some follicles gradually switch into an inactive state. If growth is absent for a long time, some follicles may gradually atrophy.

Studies show that more than half of men face different forms of baldness. As a rule, the first signs of excessive shedding appear right after puberty ends or a little later, and by the age of 50, many men experience significant hair loss.

Normal or not?

Hair loss is a normal process. If you lose up to 100 hairs a day, you will hardly notice it. Hair does not grow forever — its life is cyclical and has 3 phases:

  • Anagen. Active growth, when cells divide rapidly. During this time, hair grows about 1 cm per month. This phase lasts from 2 to 6 years.
  • Catagen. Growth stabilizes, cell division slows down, and pigment production stops. At the end of catagen, the hair follicle is «disconnected from the system» — blood supply to the bulb stops. The phase lasts no more than 14 days.
  • Telogen. At this time, the hair remains in the follicle, but it does not grow. It falls out after 2—4 months.

The whole cycle repeats 25—30 times over a person’s lifetime.

Normally, about 85—90% of hair is in the anagen phase. If this balance is disrupted, excessive hair loss occurs.

Causes of hair loss

Why do men lose hair, and can it be stopped?

There are several common causes of male hair loss.

Genetics and hormones

Hereditary factors are one of the key causes. If your grandfather, father, brothers, or other close male relatives had crown thinning, there is a high chance of excessive hair loss in you too — hormones are involved. The culprit behind this type of alopecia is dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which weakens and miniaturizes hair follicles: hair becomes thinner and shorter, and the growth cycle shortens. A man may have normal hormone levels and still have a genetically determined sensitivity of the follicles to DHT. This type of alopecia is called androgenic, or hereditary.

Stress

One of the most important factors today. A string of constant troubles and emotional stress can also cause temporary increased hair shedding. Usually the situation improves on its own once the stress factors go away, but if your background stress level is high enough, shedding becomes constant and the follicles do not have time to recover.

Poor diet

Fast food and a lack of vitamins affect the body as a whole and the condition of the hair. A shortage of vitamins (D, E, A), minerals (iron, zinc), and biotin can also affect the condition of the hair and scalp, as well as the skin in general. Improving your diet is one way to help your hair in the long term.

Heat styling and physical damage

Frequent use of shampoos with harsh surfactants, styling products, and dyes can damage hair and make it brittle. Hair dryers and flat irons can have a similar effect: hair is damaged by exposure to high temperatures. The shaft breaks down, which can also lead to shedding.

How to prevent hair loss: prevention

Maintain a balanced diet, keep a regular sleep schedule, and exercise. If hair loss becomes noticeable, it is worth consulting an endocrinologist or trichologist.

For prevention, use gentle daily care products — we recommend shampoos from the Swedish professional brand Noberu of Sweden.

Use a hair dryer and straightener only when absolutely necessary. Let your hair dry naturally.

Why does hair fall out on the head but not in the beard?

This paradox has created the myth that baldness cannot be slowed down. In reality, hair on the scalp and hair in the beard evolved for different functions, which is why they respond differently to DHT.

In many men, the follicles around the crown and hairline are genetically sensitive to DHT. Over time, this hormone gradually shortens the hair growth cycle: hair becomes thinner, weaker, grows more slowly, and the follicles themselves become smaller.

With the beard, the situation is the opposite. Facial hair follicles воспринимают androgens as a signal for active growth. As a result, beard hair becomes denser, coarser, and darker — especially with age.

That is why a man can experience thinning hair on the scalp while at the same time noticing stronger beard growth.

For the same reason, hair transplants usually use follicles from the back of the head: they are generally less sensitive to DHT and better retain their ability to grow even after transplantation.

Can hair growth be stimulated and hair loss stopped?

When unfavorable factors are present — such as stress, genetics, or health problems — the tendency toward hair loss increases. At this point, it is important not only to gently cleanse the scalp, but also to use intensive care regularly to stimulate growth — you need to prevent weakening and shedding before you even notice it. Because if you do notice it, then for many of the hairs that have already fallen out, it is too late, and some of the follicles will no longer recover.

Even if you do not get back the hair you had at 18, you can still improve the situation while it has not gone too far — that is, while the follicles are still capable of producing healthy hair.

At Nebrito, there are two different systems for this: Tolure and Ballangi. Both systems use modern active ingredients found in anti-hair-loss products, work on the «shampoo + serum» principle, but focus on different active components.

In Tolure, the main focus is on the Redensyl® complex and caffeine. Redensyl® is often discussed as a cosmetic alternative to minoxidil-based products. It helps maintain follicle activity and extend the hair growth phase, while caffeine is intended to stimulate scalp microcirculation. This line is suitable for those who notice gradual thinning and want their hair to look denser and stronger.

Ballangi formulas are built around peptides, plant extracts, and ingredients that support the scalp. This natural care focuses not only on growth stimulation, but also on the overall condition of the scalp and hair roots — especially if the hair has become more brittle and weakened.

  1. Shampoo — gently cleanses the scalp and prepares it for active care. Apply with massaging movements and leave on for 1—2 minutes before rinsing. Can be used continuously, without breaks.
  2. Serum — applied to clean scalp along the partings. Do not rinse out. It provides the main stimulating effect, which is why regular use is important. Use as a course treatment.

Both systems are designed for course use: noticeable changes usually appear after several weeks of consistent use.

The initial course is 3 months.

We recommend alternating the two systems to support the follicles more comprehensively, and at the first signs of shedding, visiting a trichologist.
