The ancient Romans believed that the thermal springs of Termes di Saturnia were formed by lightning strikes thrown by Jupiter at Saturn during a fierce quarrel. Jupiter missed, the arrows hit the ground, and the thermal waters known as the Thermae di Saturnia gushed forth.
The sulphurous spring water of these springs with a constant temperature of 37.5C has been known for thousands of years for its therapeutic properties — the first spas here date back to the times of ancient Rome.
