Traces from the handle rubbing against the base plate not only spoil the aesthetic appearance of the razor, but can also cause the chrome plating to peel off in the long term. The protective nylon ring prevents this process.
The overlay is slightly larger than a similar clear overlay and fits most 3-piece razors.
